Depending on how long you want to take, you can do it as an overnight and camp at one of the car camps at Big Basin - that's how I did it a few years ago, but it means two long days (17 mi and 15 mi, I think, which is a bit of a pain when you throw in a shuttle and the short daylight hours)

Most of my adventures are in the far north redwood parks, like Jedediah Smith.

Your photo captioned "pretty trail through the oaks" looks so much like a view in Rogue River National Park along the Cook and Green Trail. Except that it is madrone and oak. Just shy of Red Buttes Wilderness. It's virtually at the north CA border.

very nice....we hiked round top peak one december 31st...snowing....spent the new year on top of the peak..at midnight the sky cleared...the wind stopped...lots of stars..drank a bottle of champange....one of the best new years of my life...great area.

Great letter Rebecca. I like your idea of increasing state vehicle licence fees, and making park access free for residents. This type of solution has worked in other states, and will work here. Our state parks represent irreplaceable values. Not to mention over 100 years of stewardship, preservation, and conservation. Closing the parks would be like a family abandoning their children.

Hi Mr. Goad,
Unfortunately, California's sales tax was just temporarily increased and our counties have some of the highest sales tax rates in the country. Californians just voted down extending that sales tax increase for another couple of years to get us out of our current budget crises. It's not a popular idea here and wouldn't fly. In California tax increases have to pass by a 2/3 majority not a simple majority and Republican legislators have sworn not to vote for any more tax increases.

Funding for our state parks in Arkansas is protected by the state's constitution. A 1/8 cent sales tax provides funding for recreation and conservation. It was implemented after the voters approved it as part of a constitutional amendment over 15 years ago.

While other state parks are in decline, ours are thriving.

Bob: This was the first time for me going out of the Regency Drive Trailhead. My friend Emilie has done this route dozens of times for her mountaineering training. I've gone out of Mitchell Canyon for a couple of hikes and I can see how it could be preferable grade-wise. Either way any of the peaks in Mt Diablo S.P. are not for those without perseverance! Unless of course they just drive up to the top...cheaters.

Oh, you went the HARD way....from Donner. I usually go via Mitchell Canyon, which is probably longer but makes it possible for me. I was up there the 23rd doing something with ABC News (yet to be aired). North Peak and Olympia make a fine test. Good job finishing that loop!

Recycling unfortunately requires machinery that uses oil and energy which is often generated by oil or natural gas... Do those in power care? I think those in power want to maintain that power and will do whatever it takes to stay there so they care in so much that it supports their agenda.
